Other Benefits

"A" members of the IBEW participate in an IBEW Pension Benefit Fund (PBF). The PBF allows for a modest normal pension, and allows for early retirement and a disability pension where a person is eligible. There is also a death benefit to the survivors of "A" members. The PBF has assets of approximately $1.5 billion. There are no employer contributions to the IBEW PBF.

Local 1928 also makes available, with Benefit Plan Administrators (BPA), a medical/dental benefit package, whose premiums are usually shared by employers and employees. With BPA, the Local also administers a defined contribution pension fund for outside line construction members. The collective agreement with your employer will specify the amount the the employer will contribute to the pension fund on the employee's behalf (usually a dollar amount per hour). Those contributions form a part of the overall wage package.

Labour unions have a long history of fighting for health and safety rights for workers; in fact, protecting the safety of employees in the electrical industry was one of the reasons that workers joined together to found the IBEW in 1891.

Local 1928 cooperates in every way with employers to help make workplace a safe and healthy. And today many employers are taking the lead: they recognize that it makes good business sense to promote the best in safety and health--the costs are too high to do anything less.

In Canada, each province has legislation specific to occupational Health and Safety. This legislation includes regulations that ensure employers maintain a safe workplace. It also protects workers against violence, harassment and discrimination. But safety is a two-way street and workers also have obligations. Provincial legislation outlines the rights and responsibilities of workers related to hazardous materials, safety equipment, and training.

NS Occupational Health and Safety Act ; PEI Occupational Health and Safety Act

Each unionized workplace should have a Health and Safety Committee and/or representative. A Health and Safety Committee can give you advice on how to stay safe at work, and it can work with the employer to deal with complaints about possible health and safety violations. A Health and Safety Committee can help ensure that your employer is in compliance with Health and Safety legislation and can make effective recommendations to improve workplace safety.

For more information about safety in your workplace, contact your Health and Safety Committee, shop steward, or union representative.

You spend a good portion of your adult life working and, aside from your health and family, your job is probably the most important concern you have. You have the right to a degree of job satisfaction in our career and a right to a decent wage and working conditions. If you don't have those, or if you would like to protect the wages and conditions you currently enjoy, consider whether membership in the IBEW might benefit you.

The IBEW has the resources and trained staff to do the job of representing workers in negotiations, safety, grievances, arbitrations, workers compensation, labour legislation and all other areas of labour relations.

The IBEW is a voice for working people throughout North America. In Canada, the IBEW is a member of the Canadian Federation of Labour. In Nova Scotia, IBEW Local 1928 is a member of the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour and our Business Manager James Sponagle is a General Vice President on its executive council.

Apprenticeship is an agreement between a person (an apprentice) who wants to learn a skill and an employer who needs a skilled worker. Apprenticeship combines on-the-job experience with technical classroom training. After completing both the classroom and the on-the-job training, apprentices can receive journeyperson certification or a certificate of qualification. Depending on the trade, it takes about 2 to 5 years as an apprentice to become a certified journeyperson. About 80% to 90% of the training is in the workplace; the rest is at a training institution.

Nova Scotia Power sponsors and runs internal apprenticeship programs for the following red seal or provincially designated trades in Nova Scotia:

  1. Powerline Technician
  2. Power Engineer
  3. Industrial Mechanic
  4. Instrumentation and Control Technician
  5. Gas Fitter

The IBEW Local 1928 participates in the Joint Apprenticeship Committee (JAC) with Nova Scotia Power Inc. to help direct and support apprentices. For information about the JAC, please contact one of the participating union representatives:

Jim Sponagle
Craig Anderson
Keith MacKinnon

APPRENTICESHIP IN THE LABOUR POOL:

The purpose of IBEW Local 1928 sponsoring a limited number of apprentices in the NSP Labour Pool is to allow NSP term employees to collect apprentice hours that will lead to certification in a provincial or Red Seal trade that is not sponsored by NSP. Note that IBEW Local 1928 is not an employer, but a sponsor. The NSP Labour Pool Administrator manages a system for distributing available term work fairly amongst qualified Labour Pool B members. In this way, Local 1928 aims to help more members achieve trade certification.  At present, the labour pool apprenticeship is full.  We have had a lot of success in sponsoring the current apprenticeships.  Please check back shortly for future availability.
