Here we go...year number three of the COVID-19.  Who knew the pandemic would turn out to be a trilogy?

Last fall, things were looking up.  Vaccination numbers were climbing and COVID-19 case counts were dropping.  We were even able to host our first in-person conference since the pandemic began, our Canadian Women's Conference.  Unfortunately COVID had other plans with the introduction of the Omicron variant.

Currently, many provinces have reintroduced lockdowns and/or restrictions on gathering.  As daunting as this seems, we've all been here before and we know we will get through it together.  In terms of what this year will look like...time will tell.  We continue to host monthly virtual NextGen and Women's committee meetings to not only further our work in the labour movement but to stay connected to one another.

This pandemic has taken a toll on all of us, particular when it comes to our mental health.  Please take the time to check in on family and friends, especially our seniors.  If you are experiencing declining mental health, please reach out for help.  Many employers/local unions have Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) which are free to use and are confidential.  For more information on supports available including crisis hotlines, click here.

As we head into this new year, I'd like you to be aware of some upcoming events.  It is too early to say what these events will look like, but we are hopeful that we will be able to gather in person.

  • BMT Conference - San Antonio, TX - Mar. 7-11
  • Construction Conference - Washington, DC - Mar. 31-Apr. 2
  • Nuclear Conference - New Orleans, LA - May 5-7
  • IBEW INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION - Chicago, IL - May 9-13
  • Utility Conference - St, Pete Beach, FL - May 24-26
  • ACPM NextGen Caucus - Regina, SK - Aug. 13-14
  • ACPM - Regina, SK - Aug. 15-18
  • MD Conference - San Antonio, TX - Aug. 30-Sept. 1
  • Women's Conference - Washington, DC - Sept. 7-10
  • Railroad & Government Conference - Myrtle Beach, SC - Oct. 16-19
Keep up the great work and cheers to 2022!

In solidarity,
Cheryl Paron, International Representative

Thank you to all of the committees who joined the December calls.  These calls serve as a way to stay connected with committees across the country.  They help us share ideas, solve problems, build solidarity and provide general support to each other.  All local unions are welcome to participate, however we ask that you limit your participation to 3 people from your local union.  If you're interested, please email International Representative, This email address is being protected from spambots. Electrical Workers Minority Caucus (EWMC) Annual Leadership Conference

The IBEW Electrical Workers Minority Caucus (EWMC) is holding its 32nd annual Leadership Conference January 13-15, 2021.  Given the current state of the COVID-19 pandemic, this event will be held virtually via zoom.  The theme of the conference is “Inspiring Resilience & Nurturing Strength” and will address pressing challenges, explore new opportunities for growth, best practices and strategies to expand EWMC's vision and goals.

National Elections for EWMC and RENEW officers and board members for the 2022-2024 term will take place during the virtual conference. The Swearing-In Ceremony of newly elected officers will take place Saturday afternoon, January 15, 2022, at 4:00 pm eastern time. In accordance with Article VII of the EWMC Constitution, to run for national office, a member must be in good standing and meet the criteria as set forth in Section 5. A member must be in compliance with the provisions set forth in the EWMC’S operating bylaws to accept a nomination.

EWMC-RENEW delegates will hold Nominations and Elections for their officers and board during the EWMC-RENEW Conference. Only members between the ages of 18 and 35 are eligible to vote and run for office in the RENEW Elections.

The tentative conference schedule is outlined below:

  • EWMC-RENEW Conference - January 13 from 7-9pm EST
  • EWMC Conference Opening - January 14 from 7-9pm EST
  • EWMC Conference Closing - January 15 from 10:30am-4:30pm EST
After the conference there will be discussion rooms open to socialize.

The EWMC operates independently of the IBEW but is made up solely of IBEW members.  In order to attend the conference, IBEW members must be members of the EWMC.  The conference registration fee is $125 USD which includes the annual EWMC membership dues of $75 USD.  Registration and payment can be done online at http://www.ibew-ewmc.com/. Upon registering you will receive a confirmation email.  Links needed to join the general sessions and workshops of your choice will be sent no later than 48 hours prior to the conference.

If you require more information or have any questions about EWMC and/or the conference, please feel free to contact the EWMC Officers.
