The IBEW Local 1928 hockey tournament, which was held this weekend in Tantallon, NS, had an exciting finish with two evenly-matched teams—Point Tupper/Biomass and the Sackville Bucket Monkeys—battling it out in the final on Sunday afternoon. The Bucket Monkeys managed to put one in the net after a scramble in front of the Tupper goalie in the dying minutes of the game, leaving the score tied 1-1 at the close of regular time. After a five-minute overtime playing four-on-four, the score was still tied and it took a shootout to decide which was the better team that day. On Sunday afternoon, it was Point Tupper/Biomass. Thank you to Local President Jim Sponagle who was the tournament organizer. Thank you's go also to Nova Scotia Power, which supplied prizes to the second-place team, and to Tony Stevens, plant manager at Tufts Cove, who sponsored a celebratory steak meal for all the team participants. See you next year when the tournament will be held in Prince Edward Island!

The United Steelworkers, Local 9176, has been on the picket line for eighteen months against Crown Holdings, Inc. in Toronto. Crown Holdings, Inc., is a profitable multinational company with more than 140 plants worldwide. In the year prior to the labour dispute, Crown Holdings-Toronto Plant was named one of the premier plants in the organization. Despite that, the employer has sought concession at the bargaining table, the main concession being a two-tier wage proposal.

The Canadian Labour Congress has a approved a request from the United Steelworkers to boycott Crown Holdings, Inc. There are several activites being initiated in Ontario, but the United Steelworkers have suggested that union members Canada-wide could support Local 9176 by refusing to purchase aluminum cans made by Crown Holdings. Crown's main customers in Canada are Molson, Coors, Labatt, Creemore and Stem Whistle, Budweiser, Bud Light. They also manufacture soft drink cans for Cott, a leading provider of private label soft drinks (e.g. President's Choice). The attached infographic will help you identify Crown cans.
