History
History of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.
- The I.B.E.W. was founded on Nov. 21, 1891 in St. Louis, Missouri.
- The 1st Canadian Local was founded in 1899 in Ottawa, Ontario.
- There are approximately 947 Locals in North America – representing approximately 780,000 plus members.
- In Canada, there are approximately 93 Locals representing approximately 58,000 members.
History of IBEW Local 1928
- The I.B.E.W. granted Local 1928 its charter on January 1, 1955.
- In 1973 IBEW amalgamated System Council U29 into Local 1928 when N.S. Light & Power, Eastern Light & Power and the N.S. Power Commission amalgamated to become one employer – N.S. Power Corporation.
- At present we have approximately 1,175 members.
- Local 1928 (i,o&u) has 2 types of membership: ‘A’ and ‘BA’
- ‘A’ members pays into a pension plan and death benefit. ‘A’ members can travel between IBEW Locals in North America. If a member wishes to travel to work in the IBEW he or she must be an ‘A’ member.
- ‘BA’ members are stationery members who basically work for one employer and receive benefits under their collective agreement with their employer.
- We negotiate & administer 10 Collective Agreements:
- N.S. Power Inc.
- Cablecom
- Line Construction [N.S. Utility Contractors]
- Town of Shelburne
- Town of Lockeport
- Berwick Electric Commission
- Town of Antigonish [Utility]
- Town of Antigonish [Works]
- Region of Queens Municipality
- Municipality of the District of Shelburne
- Under our jurisdiction we cover many trades & non-trade classifications including but not limited to:
- Powerline Technicians, Electricians, Mechanics,
Machinists, Power Engineers, Storekeepers,
Utilitymen, Meter People, Technicians, Planners, Welders, Pipefitters, etc
- Under the Municipalities we represent the following:
- Water & Sewer Technicians, Sanitary Engineers, Office Staff,
Labourers, Powerline Technicians
