IBEW Local 1928 is part of a Joint Apprenticeship Committee with Nova Scotia Power Inc. We have three union reps on this committee, they are as follows:
Brian MacEachern, Assistant Business Manager (Union Office)
Jeff Richardson, Maintenance Journeyman (Trenton)
Louis MacArthur, Power Engineer (Lingan)
In 2010 we have 86 apprentices registered with the Department of Labour and Workforce Development. Most of these apprentices are registered as Powerline Technicians (52) or Power Engineer Apprentices (29). A much smaller number are completing Red Seal Trades in the following programs: Industrial Electrician (1), Industrial Mechanic (2) & Truck and Transport Mechanic (1), Power Plant Technicians II (1). In addition, there are 5 in house apprenticeships being completed.
Besides all the on-the-job training that apprentices receive, in the 2009-2010 school year, our apprentices attended a total of 262 weeks worth of block release training. the 2010-2011 training year will be very similiar. This year, a large group of PLT’s and Power Engineers attended Block Release training and were successful. A round of applause is in order for all those who were successful…a job well done!
